What’s in a hurricane name??

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

The past two hurricane seasons in Central Florida have been pretty quite… too quite… So it’s no surprise to most Floridians that this season is shaping up to be a lively one. Just last week we were drenched by Fay, and along with keeping an eye on Gustav we’re now watching tropical storm Hanna.

Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists made by the National Hurricane Center. The original lists were composed entirely of female names. In 1979, due to sexist overtones (male meteorologists referring to the stormy personalities of women they knew), male names were introduced and now alternate with female names alphabetically.
Six lists of names are used in rotation so the list used in 2008 will again be used in 2014. These lists use all the letter of the alphabet except for Q, U, X, Y, or Z. The only situation in which the list is changed is if a storm is so costly or deadly that using that name for a future storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity. In 2005 the names Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Stan and Wilma were all retired. Since 1953, 67 names have been stricken from the lists.

All Good Things Must Come To An End

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Two months have passed since I started my internship here at Benedict. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better summer, getting to spend 2 months in Europe and then coming home to 2 months of a wonderful internship experience. I will admit it was tough getting used to waking up early and working 8:30 to 5 every day (come on now, I’m a college student) but in the end, it was all worth it. I can say with most certainty that I got more out of this internship than most of my fellow classmates did at their internships. Client interaction and problem solving are two of the most valuable skills that I will take from Benedict, along with how to play a good prank…

I don’t think there was a day that I came into work and didn’t have a good laugh, or at least pick on Darin a bit, all in good fun of course. Although I am excited to head back to school and have an awesome senior year, I will miss seeing all the silly employees of Benedict Advertising every day. And to those tailgating for every Gator home game, don’t think you can get too far; I will be stopping by every single tailgate. All in all, I sum this summer up as probably the best one yet (a pretty big statement, but true)!

Don’t miss me too much, Benedict employees…GO GATORS!

All In a Days Work

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

This past week at Benedict was probably one of my most exciting. I gave our photographer Kendi a hand at Father Lopez on Monday in preparation for our upcoming photo shoot. The campus was coming together, but didn’t quite look ready for a shoot, which made us a little nervous. But when we arrived on Thursday for the actual shoot, it looked completely turned around. Kendi and I were surprised and very pleased that everything looked polished and clean on Thursday. The shoot went well; it was definitely a new experience seeing all that a photo shoot entails.

Wednesday I got the chance to visit the Guy Harvey office in Ft. Lauderdale with Nicole, which was definitely the highlight of my week! Not only did we get to look through pages of Guy’s artwork, but I got the chance to see a little bit of what Guy Harvey Inc. does. I was basically fascinated with everything I learned and got to see. I also helped brainstorm some ideas for Guy Harvey, some of which Nicole and I think have great potential. Hmmm, maybe Guy Harvey Inc. will give me a job after I finish school?

Tip of the day, go see Will Ferrell’s new movie, Step Brothers if you want a good laugh. Saving the best for last, read this article! GO GATORS!
